Initiated in 2010, the school vegetable garden was introduced in order to promote healthy eating habits in children by teaching them the positive impact this has on their academic success.
This project takes place in 15 schools in the department of Rivas directed by a horticulture specialist, who teaches them the science of crops, their functions and nutritional value, and how to tend them properly. As a result, the children directly reap the benefits of their own labor, and learn the value of teamwork and responsibility in raising the garden.
The crops produced each year include: tomatoes, bell peppers, watermelon, radishes, and plantain, among others.
